Its already the time of year we start hearing, season championship night or final race of the season. Going into Labor Day weekend, several tracks will be hosting their final events of the 2010 season. Old school thoughts were once school starts, high school football season opens, and the temps drop at night, race fans will shy away from the tracks. With what seems to be more moderate temps lasting longer into the fall and racers and race fans still looking for some action, some tracks stick it out after Labor Day and continue business as usual more and more in recent years. Either way, you better get out to the tracks soon. Last week I seen a sign coming back from Waynesfield that stated, 18 weeks til Christmas.
Speaking of Season Championships and final races of the season, last Friday Limaland Motorsports Park hosted their final race of 2010. Plus, it was the NRA Sprints points final. 28 NRA Sprints were ready for the finale. Both the Limaland and NRA titles were up for grabs.
The heats races were full of action as it seemed guys were making moves and putting their cars into spots they won't even think about if it was early in the season. A lot of clean hard racing. JR Stewart, Butch Schroeder, and Mike Dussel won the heats.
After a tough battle in his heat, Dustin Daggett bounced back to win the B Main. Kyle Sauder took the McDonald's Dash for Cash win.
With Butch Schroeder and JR Stewart gunning for the titles, the 25 lap A Main was pushing out. Tim Allison and Dennis Yoakam paced the field to the green. Allison gets a great start and rides the high line into the lead. Allison holds strong as Sauder, Hall, Schroeder, Dussel, and Stewart work towards the leader. By lap 9, Allison, Sauder, and Hall are nose to tail. They battle nose to tail, side by side, for the lead. As they enter lapped traffic, an excellent battle is on. Lap 11, Shelden Haudenschild and Caleb Helms spin right in front of the leaders. Everyone missed the spinners and a quick yellow was thrown. The battle rages on after the restart. Yoakam is still in the top 5 a battle hard too until lap 16 when he spins just past the flag stand, battling for position. Green, the top 4 are duking it out now. Luke Hall passes Allison a handful of times but, Allison returns the favor seconds later. Sauder makes several attempts too, falling short
every attempt. With less than 5 to go, any of the top 4, maybe 5 could win. Lap 23, Daggett spins after charging up to 7th from 16th. A 2 lap shoot out, not only for the win but for the titles as well. Green, Allison gets an awesome restart and everyone scrambles to make their move. No one has a chance as Allison stays strong and takes the win. Sauder makes a last ditch effort in turn 4, jumps the cushion as Hall, Schroeder, and Dussel pass by, dropping Sauder to 5th at the line. Schroeder just inches past Dussel for 3rd and with Stewart's 6th place finish, they tie for the Limaland points title. The 1st tie breaker, most wins, they are tied in wins too. 2nd tie breaker, most 2nd place finishes, title to JR Stewart as he earned more 2nd place finishes in the 2010 season. Schroeder was happy tho because his 3rd place finish earned him the NRA season title.
Great racing to end the season at Lima on a very racy track. The guys were going all out and wasn't leaving much on the table on this night. Sprint cars on a 1/4 tracks seem to most generally showcase good racing. Its that time of year but, its sad to think no more racing at Limaland til April 2011.
Saturday night Waynesfield Motorsports Park was hosting their regular traditional sprint car show along with a make-up A Main from a July rain out. The field was set for the make-up race as 33 cars made the trip for the regular weekly program.
Not only was there 2 A Mains I was going to get to watch, thanks to Dean Miracle, the entire Waynesfield Motorsports Park staff, and Tim Cole, I was going to get some laps in a traditional sprint car after the show. An excellent field of 33 cars were ready for action.
Not only was I driving, I spent the night in the pits with Tim Cole, getting dirty working on the car. With several fuel issues, the night just got a lot harder. As we thrashed to fix the issues, we got most fixed before the make-up A Main.
Dustin Trost and Todd Keen paces the field for the 25 laps make-up A. As the green flag waves, Keen takes the lead. Lap 1, Jim Dues spins after some contact. Jim is towed pit side. Keen leads on the restart but Mike Brecht is on the move. Lap 3, Brecht takes the lead. As Brecht works the high side and leads, Matt Westfall is on the bottom and reeling Brecht in each lap. Lap 8, Curtis Edney Jr takes a nasty tumble in turn 3, knocking part of the fence over. After a quick clean-up and fence repair, the field is ready to roll. Brecht and Westfall battle on the restart. Lap 11, Westfall slips past for the lead. Brecht hangs tough for a few lap before Westfall motors away, opening up a sizable lead. As Westfall runs away from the pack, Steve Irwin is charging to the front. As Irwin battles to the top 5 and then the top 3, Westfall rides off into the sunset. Westfall takes the win. Irwin, up from 14th, Brecht, Luke Hall, and Trost round out the top 5.
After firing off the 5 car for the 5th and final time, we got all the leaks fixed and are ready to roll for the heat races. With 2 make-up A mains and the 4 division regular show, the track was slicking up as the sprint car heats pushed off. With 33 cars, 4 heats were ran. Some great racing in the heats seen cars charge from the last row for transfer spots and several last lap battles for the final transfer position. Kevin Thomas JR, Joe Bares, Chad Wilson, and Matt Westfall won heat races. Tim, well he tagged the tail of the heat after having all kind of fuel issue and with never being to Waynesfield, not getting hot laps, and only the 3rd time ever in a sprint car, playing it safe and getting laps was a great idea.
In a very eventful B Main that seen all kind of passing, Mike Brecht takes the win. Mark Hery and Jim Dues transfer from deep in the pack. Hery from 7th and Dues, after thrashing from his heat race right up to push off time for the B, from 14th. Dues team was extremely happy as they should be after working up to the second the cars were pushed into the line-up chute.
Matt Westfall and Chad Wilson paced the field for the 25 lap A Main. With Westfall the dominator at The Field this season, everyone could pretty well guess what might happen in this one. As the green waves, Westfall's 410 out powers Wilson's 305 as he shots to the lead. Westfall is on a mission to sweep the night and opens up a big lead quickly. Luke Hall, Josh Moffatt, and Steve Irwin join the battle upfront but several car lengths behind Westfall. Lap 11, Tom Rhoades spins causing a yellow. As the field slows for the yellow, Irwin runs over an infield tire to avoid the slowing cars that he must not of seen and flips. Restart, Westfall starts right back to where he left off, on the hammer and in the lead on the extreme low side. Moffatt and Hall try to mount a charge. Not tonight, Westfall is hooked-up and stinks up the show. Westfall cruises to sweep the night and takes win number 2. Moffatt, Hall, Mike Dunlap, Mike Galadja, up from 13th, round out the top 5.
As the support divisions finished up, it was time for me and Erik to suit up for our 5 minutes of fame. Once the dust settled, I was suited-up, strapped in, and ready to roll. Surprising, well not really to me, as I got pushed on to the track with the 4 wheeler, I was ready to roll and really didn't have any butterflies or nerves a bothering me. After last minutes instructions and a smack on the head, not to junk his stuff, Tim sent the push truck to the back bumper. As the car fires, I am pumped up. My main problem the first few laps, I was having trouble getting my footing proper on the brake pedal, actually thought one time the brakes were going out. I finally got my footing right and was off and on the throttle more and more. If you were there, a little too hard on and off, not smooth at all. I either mashed it or was off of it, not much in between, which I should of done a better job of doing. Hey, I was having the time of my life though in a non wing car, mashing the gas, feeling the car wanting to point to the infield and having to steer and throttle out of it. In turns 3 and 4, I was getting it down pretty decent, 1 and 2, I seemed to struggle with a bit more. Was I caring, hell no, I was having a blast! I knew I wasn't going to set the track record or get someone kicked out of a ride because I was the next Dave Darland. I did what I wanted to do, had a drive that may never happen again in my life, and it was a drive of a lifetime. By the way, for those of you wondering, non wing rocks! I mean I would cut my left, well you know what off to race winged or non wing sprint cars and I am no expert sprint car driver but, I have had excellent enough friends now to let me practice some laps in both, non wing kicks ass! A huge shout out to Tim Cole, Dean Miracle, Skinny Kenny, Jamie, Gerry, yeah I heard you announcing my laps by the way, I will get even, and the entire staff at Waynesfield Motorsports Park for another dream come true. If I died on the way home, I would have died knowing I got to live out one my dreams, most people in life can't say that, I can! I can't thank you people enough! Was I excited? Just ask Tim, Erik, or the Wilson's, I was shaking after, not from nerves or from being scared, it was from pure adrenaline rushing through my veins. I didn't even know I was shaking I was so pumped up. Plus, a shout out to Kirkendall racing still from a few years ago when they turned my first life long dream into a reality. I have got to life out 2 life long dreams, I've always wanted to race a sprint car, still do, if nothing else at least I have drove a handful of laps in both winged and non wing now. Who knows, maybe someday my dream of racing sprint cars will come true, I know one thing, after taking some laps last Saturday, its going to be hard as hell to just go back and watch non wing sprints, knowing how awesome it was to drive a few laps and wanting to be behind the wheel all that much more now. Erik, well he did good too and it was awesome seeing him so jittery before he went out turn into pure enjoyment after he realized he would be just fine.
The last major holiday weekend during racing season. Get to a track or 2 this weekend and enjoy the nice weather and great people at the track.
Friday AVSS Dixie MI, SOD Winston MI, Spartan MI non wing championship

JGRacing
Running Up Front Rids Darren Long of a Cold.
Some days you just don’t want to get up and go. And then there are some days you went and that was what the body needed. After a night of “Armor Alling” the inside of car Darren questioned whether or not he could race this past weekend. They say milk does a body good. At JGRacing a Hoosier feasting on high RPM’s and a healthy dose of dirt did Darren’s body just fine.
For the second heat race Friday night at Tri-City Speedway the blue and black 3g started on the outside pole and Darren knew a win was needed to start anywhere near the front in the feature. After taking the lead right at the start the fresh Gaerte/Engler combo was simply too tough to beat and a heat race victory was in the teams hands.
For the feature the initial starting spot for the JGRacing entry was 7th, but with two failed attempts and one big pile up the 3g found a spot outside front row very comforting. Powering out to a huge advantage over third and within a few laps catching Brian Brown, Darren began to hear cars behind him around the middle of the race. Third on back happened to find the rubber that neither the 3g nor the 21 looked for. With two or three cars battling Darren for the runner up position contact was made giving him a cut tire and a 21st place finish at the conclusion.
Saturday evening at I-30 Speedway Darren once again found himself in the second heat starting on the front row. This time however a little more work was needed for the lead and then the win. After testing the wall, maybe some would call it smacking or even hitting it hard, Darren moved the JGRacing entry to the bottom, got his groove on, and sailed off to another heat race victory. The two heat race wins also matched the number of mud covers broken for the weekend.
With another start in the 7th spot for the feature and the track slicked off this Ohio driver knew positions would be hard to come by. After following the 10 for several laps a small bobble gave the 3g sixth and an open track to fifth. By the time Darren caught Tony Bruce he tried to pass but could not complete the transaction. Earning yet another career best ASCS National finish the JGRacing entry finished up in 6th.
This weeks Red Line Oil question is; how many career sprint car wins does Darren have? This week’s winner will receive a Hoosier Tire Hat. Please send answers to zeakemedia@gmail.com
Darren Long has t-shirts available in all sizes. Stop at the trailer and ask for one, prices are $15.
JGRacing would like to thank the following partners for their support.
Allstar Performance, Brown & Miller Racing Solutions, Crower, Dyer Rods, Gaerte Engines, GLR Investments, Hoosier Tire, J&E Pistons, Long Farms, Red Line Oil, Slade Shock Technology, Total Seal, and XYZ Machining.

Westfall sweeps dual features at Waynesfield Raceway Park.
August 29, 2010
WAYNESFIELD, Ohio
by Gerry Keysor
After Mother Nature poured on Waynesfield Raceway Park the last two Saturdays, she finally smiled down with blue skies and comfortable temperatures for a great night of racing at the 1/3 mile bullring. The racing action was nothing short of amazing all night with “The Flyin Buckeye” Matt Westfall sweeping both Lee's Hydraulics Non Wing Sprint features. Brian Post picked up the win in the makeup Post Agri-Service UMP Modified feature, while Jerry Bowersock nabbed the 2nd Modified feature. Beau Stewart won a thrilling AMSA Mini Sprint feature, and Justin Durflinger ran away with the JR and Sons Service Center Compact feature.
Starting off racing action was the makeup Lee's Hydraulics Non Wing Sprint feature from July 24th. Just as the green flag was waving, the yellow immediately was thrown for debris, causing drivers to stack up, with the 43g of Chad Grear ending up the victim of a flat right rear after contact during the melee. The field was reset with Grear watching from the infield. #18k Todd Keen would jump out to the lap 1 lead before caution would fly again, this time for the #63 of Jim Dues. As the field restarted, Leipsic, Ohio's Mike Brecht, aboard the P&W Machine #8b, powered around the 18k to grab the lead. Brecht tried to set sail from the field, but the E&E Machine and Tool #54 of Matt Westfall started his march from his 5th starting spot making his way to the 2nd spot on lap 6. The Team Fenner, PPC sponsored # 34 of “The Ohio Hammer” Luke Hall, made his way up to 4th spot on lap 8, but that was as far as he'd get in this feature, as an ill handling race car kept his hands full the remainder of the race. On lap 10, the battle for the lead would catch fire as Westfall threw a huge slide job on Brecht grabbing the lead, but Brecht battled back with a crossover move down the back straight away taking the lead back briefly before Westfall used his momentum on the highside of turns 3&4 to take the lead for good. On lap 15, the #0 of Steve Irwin, the 2009 Lane Automotive Michigan Traditional Sprints Points champion, had made his way into 4th past Keen and was reeling in the leaders. On lap 19, Irwin got around Hall for 3rd. On the final lap, Irwin made one final attempt to get past the #8b of Brecht and succeeded, nabbing the 2nd spot at the checkered. Westfall's win marked his 5th in 7 races at WRP in 2010 with the other 2 races ending in runner up finishes for the Pleasant Hill, Ohio native. Steve Irwin, Mike Brecht, Luke Hall and #7 Dustin Trost would complete the top 5.
Next up would be the make up feature for the Post Agri-Service UMP Modifieds. As the green flag flew the #15 of Nick Katterhenry and the #93 of Josh Greber would do battle for the point, with Greber squirting to the lead. Mean while the 45p of Brian Post would lurk in 3rd minding his time. Katerhenry would challenge for the lead on lap 4, dueling with Greber until the caution flag flew on lap 5 for an accident involving the #5x of Jerry Bowersock and the #18 of Ryan Sutter, Bowersock would take his mount to the pit area and prepare for the regular racing program later in the evening. As the green flag waved again the ZERO of Brent Hole made his way up to the 4th spot after starting 10th. Lap 9 would see Post make his way around the #15 of Katterhenry and move into 2nd. With just 5 laps remaining, Post powered by Greber and set notching his 2nd win at WRP in 2010. Greber, Katterhenry, Hole, and #20 “The Hippy” Bill Keeler would complete the top 5.
With the make up features completed, the regularly scheduled racing program got underway. With a total car count well over 100, and a great crowd in the stands, there was no shortage of action. The AMSA Mini Sprints would take the track first in feature action. When the green flag flew, Kevin Roberts Sr. showed his strength right away, powering to the lead before caution would fly on lap 2 for the spinning #11 of David Applegate. On the restart, Roberts would lead the field down to the green with #55 Rob Winks in tow. On lap 3, #28h “Hot” Rod Henning, and #27 Beau Stewart would power by Winks to grab 2nd and 3rd respectively. As lap 6 clicked by, Henning was starting to reel in Roberts, but caution would fly once again for a spinning #11 Applegate. His night would end for bring out the yellow for a 2nd time. On the restart, Winks would be docked for jumping, as he was side by side with Stewart at the restart cone. Roberts once again hold the lead, but business was definitely picking up behind him as Henning and Stewart battled side by side for 2nd for the next several laps while still staying close to Roberts, as the field came down to see 2 laps remaining, the top 3 were starting to see lapped traffic, and that set the stage for an amazing finish. Henning powered to the rear bumper of Roberts, while Stewart went to the high side and used momentum to carry the Foz Racing #27 to the lead on the final lap. Henning would just clear Roberts for 2nd, as Roberts came home 3rd, #1h Nick Daugherty who was celebrating his 26th birthday at WRP finished 4th, and #22 Ryan Broughton would complete the top 5. Heat races were won by Daugherty, Henning, and Kevin Roberts Sr. The B Main was won by #22b Brad Racer who returned from a easy roll over in his heat race.
Next up was the 2nd Lee's Hydraulics Non Wing Sprint Car feature. The inversion wheel was Matt Westfall's friend as the 4 spun on the inversion wheel would give Westfall the pole for the 25 lap A Main based upon his win in heat race #4. Westfall would not waste the opportunity, jumping out to the lead over #9k Kevin Thomas Jr. and #5j Joss Moffat. Scary moment on lap one as the #0 of Steve Irwin would spin in the middle of the field, doing 2 full rotations in turn 2 and keeping the car rolling, keeping the yellow flag from coming out. During that incident, the #20 of Tom Rhoades made contact with another vehicle. Rhoades would bring his car to a stop in turn 4, prompting a yellow flag with 1 lap complete. When racing resumed it was Westfall pulling out to a 8 car length lead, but Kevin Thomas Jr began to close, running way up on the high side of the speedway. On lap 10, Thomas had closed to within 4 car lengths of Westfall while the battle for 3rd caught fire behind them. The #41 of Steve Ott, #19 of Joe Bares, and #5j of Joss Moffat running 2 and 3 wide as they battled for 3rd. On Lap 11, Bares would clip the infield tire in turn 4, knocking the safety cone into the middle of the front stretch, prompting another yellow flag, but before the cars slowed, a unrelated incident occurred as #0 Steve Irwin flipped in turn 2, bringing out the red flag. Irwin would walk away from the accident under his own power. On the restart, Westfall led the field to the green flag, but Kevin Thomas Jr's car would not be able to carry the same speed as before the caution. Thomas would fall to Moffat and others as he slid back to a 9th place finish. Moffat would set his sights on Westfall but would never close to more than 8 car lengths with #34”The Ohio Hammer” Luke Hall making his way to 3rd. Thats the way they would finish with #37d Mike Dunlap making his way to 4th and #2 Mike Galadja finishing 5th after starting 13th. In victory lane, Westfall said that sweeping both features definitely made up for coming up one spot short of winning the 2nd Annual Jack Hewitt Classic back on August 7th. Jack Hewitt was on hand with his 2 seater raffling off 2 rides, with the 2nd winner starting the A Main in the back of the #21. JR and Sons Service Center Compact competitor Chuckie Chronister would win the 'Ride of a Lifetime” on what turned out to be his birthday. What a way to celebrate for Chuckie! Heat races were won by #9k Kevin Thomas Jr., #19 Joe Bares, #14 Chad Wilson, and # 54 Matt Westfall. B Main was won by #8b Mike Brecht. Kudos to #5c Tim Cole making his 3rd ever sprint car start, staying out of trouble and logging laps last night.
Next up were the Post Agri-Service UMP Modifieds. At the beginning of the night it was revealed that the modifieds would receive a $1000 bonus to their purse for the A Main, making it $800 to win for the feature winner, thanks to Curt Frazier of Frazier's Garage and Towing in Ridgeway, Ohio and Hostetler Metals. As the green flag waved over the field, #36 Brandon Vaughan took advantage of starting on the pole, jumping out to an early lead over #93 Josh Greber and #45p Brian Post. The yellow flag would wave for the #12 of Buzz Jacobs who smacked the outside guardrail and later take his ride to the pits for the evening. On the restart, Post made it clear he wanted to sweep both Modified features as he powered his way to the lead down the backstretch, leaving Vaughan with his hands full in a battle for 2nd with the University of Northwestern Ohio #01 of Chris Puskas. Puskas, the New Jersey native in one of 2 UNOH modifieds at Waynesfield last night, would wrestle the 2nd spot away from Vaughan, but all eyes were on “Jedi” Jerry Bowersock in the Army's Auto #5x, as he was marching his way through the field from his 12th place starting spot. By lap 13, Bowersock, the Wapak, Ohio native, would make his way past Puskas and set his sights on race leader Brian Post. Caution would wave for the # 5 of Nick Katterhenry as he looped his ride out in turns 3 and 4. On the restart, Bowersock began working the middle of the racetrack while Post was down on the bottom. On lap 15, Bowersock made his move, powering by Post on the high side. Caution flew one more time on lap 19 for the #16 of Jimmie Haager and the #4 of Mike Chrisman, as they tangled in turn 4. Haager would be able to continue, but Chrisman's night was done. The stage was set for a 6 lap dash to the finish. As the green flew for the final time, Bowersock pulled away and grabbed the checkered flag over Post, Puskas, Vaughan, and #20k Bill Keeler would grab his 2nd top 5 of the night. Bowersock and crew celebrated in victory lane for the 2nd time in 2 nights, as the 5x also won at Limaland Motorsports Park on Friday August 27th. Heat races were won by #15 Nick Katterhenry, #44 Zach Schroeder, and #01 Chris Puskas. B Main was won by #ZERO Brent Hole.
Completing the nights racing action were the mighty JR and Sons Service Center Compacts. In an odd twist earlier in the week, it was revealed that an asphalt track had offered the top 10 in Compact points at Waynesfield a $50 bonus to skip the races at WRP and come to their track instead. In a show of solidarity, all of the top 10 were in attendance last night and ready to race. As the green flag flew on the JR and Sons Service Center Compact A Main, the #76e of Brandon Frazier jumped out front from his pole starting spot and would lead lap 1 in the Johns Muscle and Classics entry, which is sporting a very special pink paint job, celebrating the “Race For a Cure” against breast cancer. “The Jet” Jeff Kimes, back aboard his familiar white and green Rush Creek Gardens #31 would power by Frazier for the lead on lap 2, leaving Frazier to deal with the quickly closing #17 of Justin Durflinger and the #7 of Ethan Pope. Durflinger would get past Frazier first and set his sights on Kimes. On lap 8, Kimes and Durflinger would battle side by side, but the slick racing conditions better suited Durflinger and his “Black and Blue Bullet” as he would power away to a victory over Kimes, Pope, Frazier, and Mike Sawmiller completing the top 5. Heat Races were won by #17 Justin Durflinger and #31 Jeff Kimes. The JR and Sons Service Center Compacts will be rewarded for their loyalty to Waynesfield Raceway Park next Saturday night September 4th as Jerry Butler of JR and Sons Service Center in Jackson Center, Ohio and Curt Frazier of Frazier's Garage in Ridgeway, Ohio have combined to increase the purse for next weeks Compact A main to $300 to win and $50 to start. This event is open to ANY Compact teams from ANY track, as long as their cars fall within JR and Sons Service Center Compacts rules, which can be found at http://www.waynesfieldracewaypark.com, under the “Racer Info” section.
Waynesfield Raceway Park returns to action next Saturday night September 4th with a great show featuring the Lee's Hydraulics Non Wing Sprints, Post Agri-Service UMP Modifieds, Miracle Motorsports Tuff Trucks, and JR and Sons Service Center Compacts. The UMP Modifieds will be getting their last tune-up before the Bear Wieck Memorial and Big Dawg 100 on September 17th and 18th, respectively.
More importantly, Waynesfield Raceway Park will once again be “Racing For Kids With Cancer”. Every fan who brings a new toy to be donated will receive a free hot dog or free soda courtesy of the Waynesfield Raceway Park concession stand, and they will also be entered into a raffle for several different gift baskets of items donated from local businesses. In addition to those giveaways, there is also a raffle for a brand new BELL Racing Helmet signed by several open wheel superstars including the winner of the 1st Annual Jack Hewitt Classic, “The Flyin Buckeye” Matt Westfall, Jon Stanbrough, Levi Jones, and several others. Tickets for the helmet will be available at the track, and are $5 each or 5 for $20.
“Racing For Kids With Cancer” is an event very near to the hearts of several of the racers and teams at Waynesfield Raceway Park, but none more than the family, team, and friends of Tim Dick, driver of the #18b Lee's Hydraulics Non Wing Sprint at Waynesfield. Tim's daughter Ashley was diagnosed with Leukemia in 2008 at the age of 5. Ashley and her family created Ashley's Angels, a group dedicated to not only Ashley and seeing her through her tough ordeal, but also seeing that the other children at Nationwide Childrens Hospital are given reasons to smile despite facing difficult times in their own battles. With the help of fellow racers Matt and Gabe Twining and family, and the support of all of our racing family at Waynesfield Raceway Park, the 1st Annual “Racing For Kids With Cancer” Toy Drive was a rousing success, and we are looking forward to making this year's event even better.
So come out and donate a toy and enjoy a great night of racing with us on Saturday September 4th as we go “Racing For Kids With Cancer” at Waynesfield Raceway Park.

ATTICA, Ohio – It’s been a frustrating season for Dalton, Ohio’s Lee Jacobs. But the 410 sprint driver known as “The Snowman” put that all behind him by dominating the Kistler Racing Products Season Championship Night at Attica Raceway Park on Saturday, Aug. 28.
While Jacobs led all 30 laps for the feature win, Byron Reed’s third place finish earned him his sixth track championship.
In the Fultz Fabrications and Speed Shop UMP Late Models, Bellevue, Ohio’s Ryan Missler came into the night needing only a 12th place or better feature finish to claim his second consecutive track title. He put all doubts behind him by leading the last 24 laps of the feature to claim his third victory of the season and the championship.
Fremont, Ohio’s Josh Muntz led all 25 laps to earn his first career Attica victory in the Fremont Fence 305 Sprints, but the chase to the track championship came down to the last lap. D.J. Foos was able to finish seventh in the feature, and coupled with Paul Weaver’s fifth place run gave Foos the title by just a handful of points.
Wayne, Ohio’s Dwight Waltermeier took the lead on lap five and never looked back on route to his second feature win of the season in the Computer Man Dirt Trucks. Tiffin, Ohio’s Brian Arnold’s fourth place finish earned him his first ever track championship.
For Jacobs, it was his fourth career victory at Attica.
“This is a huge bounce-back for our team. We made some changes here the past week and we really clicked tonight,” said Jacobs beside his Randy and Lisa Hammer owned, Hammer Pallets, Classic Turning, Berlin Bakery backed #24h.
“I didn’t even know where victory lane was…it’s been so long since I’ve won a race I didn’t know if I was going to get another one,” joked Jacobs. “Tonight was amazing. I wish we wouldn’t have had so many cautions because that old man in that X car (Mark Keegan) he was making things pretty interesting on those restarts. Mark Keegan is one of the best drivers in our state. He did a hell of a job…it’s an honor to race with him like that. Mark was making me nervous on those restarts. I knew I had to keep switching up my starts in three and four and kind of moved around trying different lines to screw him up. The last two restarts I didn’t see him so we must have done something right. I knew the top was the place to be. Aaron and Randy Hammer and Timmy Pierce…those guys did an incredible job with the car tonight.”
For Monclova, Ohio’s Reed, the championship marked his fifth in the last six years.
“It was a good race…my car was really good. It’s tough when you start ninth behind a lot of good guys it’s tough to pass,” said Reed beside his Reebar Diecasting, ProShocks, Schoenfeld Headers, Weld Wheels backed #5. “I love this track…you couldn’t ask for better track preparation all year. Everyone asked why I was doing to good here this year and track preparation is probably the key. It’s been multi-grooved and elbows up race track all season and that makes me go good and that’s what the fans like.”
Reed’s run also takes him one step closer to winning the Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title (FAST) championship with just one point race remaining, that Sept. 11 at Fremont Speedway.
Missler’s victory in the late model feature wasn’t easy as he had to hold off a hard charging Doug Drown late in the going. He changed his line on a late race restart and Drown slipped off the track with five laps remaining.
“The car was so good except there at the end, the right rear started going away,” said Missler beside his York Fabrication, Terry McConnell Excavating, Taze D.J. Services backed #50Y. “I didn’t know where Drown was. I saw he got up to second…don’t know what happened to him; he must have dumped it off the track. There was a little like bump going into turn three and I’d hit that and it would upset the car so I just tried to stay away from that thing.:
“I have to thank everyone on my crew. Jerry Huff, my wife Amber, Dave Gullick, dad and everyone that helps out on the car all year,” added Missler beside his Quality Welding, Cenpeco Oil, J&H Concrete, Bellevue Beverage Center backed late model.
Muntz had to hold off Bobby Clark following a caution with just two laps remaining to claim the 305 sprint feature.
“The car was awesome. I was so nervous before the race. Everyone was like you need to calm down. You don’t know how hard it is to be calm when you’re trying to set the car up yourself and you have to go out there and start on the pole,” said Muntz beside his WOW Epoxy Floors, Pepsi, Wal-Mart, Rison Enterprises, Muntz Equipment Rebuild, Kear’s Speed Shop backed M28. “I saw Bobby tuck under me on those restarts but the top of the track was awesome and the car was beautiful. I have to thank my little daughter here…she turns one next Tuesday and this is the first race she’s ever been too. What a way to end the season here at Attica.”
Foos came into the night as the point leader, but defending track champion Paul Weaver was right on his tail. A caution with seven laps remaining saw Weaver running fourth and Foos in the eighth spot, which would have given Weaver the title. Foos would move into the sixth spot with three laps remaining just as the caution flew, giving him the point lead. On the restart, Foos fell back to seventh, moving Weaver into the championship. As the checkered came out, Nate Dussel was able to get around Weaver, dropping him to fifth, while Foos passed John Ivy for a seventh place finish to claim the title.
“I bounced off the wall coming to the white and I thought man here it goes I just lost it. That’s why you never give up and dig and dig and dig,” said Foos beside his Burger King, Level Performance, Buckshot Farms, Pit Stop Carryout, R&R Used Cars backed #11F. “I kept counting cars and I thought man he’s going to be hard to catch. Then the car just came alive halfway through the race and it just took off. I knew I had something to work with then.”
Waltermeier ran the top shelf of the track to perfection for the dirt truck victory.
“It’s fun up there. You have to keep it straight, you can’t get sideways up there,” said Waltermeier beside his Mitchelle Agronomics, Graham Racing Engines, CA Kustoms backed #39. “I have to thank my crew. My brother D.J. and crew chief John and my wife and all these guys that show up to root me on.”
When Bob Dible got into trouble early in the dirt truck feature, Brian Arnold just had to finish strong, which he did for the track title.
“It’s unfortunate that Bob got spun out or what ever happened. Our goal this year was to win a track championship here…this is the only place we’ve run so far this year,” said Arnold beside his Make-A-Wish Foundation, Burns Electric, Air Cooled Engines backed #33. “The truck got pretty bent up tonight but it was worth it.”
At the drop of the green for the 410 sprint feature, Lee Jacobs quickly bolted into the lead with Brad Haudenschild, Mark Keegan, Brandon Wimmer and Shawn Valenti in tow. Keegan would grab second a lap later while Jacobs pulled away. Haudenschild would bring out the caution with two laps in with the running order Lee Jacobs, Keegan, Wimmer, Phil Gressman, Valenti and Reed. Greg Wilson would stop on the track on lap eight to bring out another caution and wipe out Jacobs’ big lead
On the restart Wimmer would drive under Keegan for second with Gressman fourth and Reed up to fifth. Gressman would take third on lap 11 as Jacobs continued to pull away in the lead. Sheldon Haudenschild would spin on lap 15 to slow the action with Jacobs, Wimmer, Gressman, Keegan and Reed rounding out the top five. Jacobs once again pulled away on the ensuing restart as Wimmer and Gressman battled for second. Gressman would move into the runner-up spot on lap 17 with Keegan taking third from Wimmer on the next circuit.
Meanwhile, Jacobs was rim-riding to a commanding lead while Gressman and Keegan put on a great show for second and Wimmer and Reed battled for fourth. Cap Henry and Mike Linder would tangle on lap 20, bringing out another caution. Again on the restart Jacobs would pull away with Gressman, Keegan, Wimmer and Reed rounding out the top five. Keegan would drive around Gressman into second on lap 24, but could not close on Jacobs. Reed would drive into fourth on lap 23 and took third with five laps remaining. Haudenschild would coast to a stop on lap 27, giving Keegan one final shot at Jacobs. However, Jacobs was too strong and pulled away for the win with Keegan, Reed, Gressman and Rob Chaney rounding out the top five.
In the 25-lap late model feature, Dan Wallace would grab the early lead over Missler, Bill Hahn, Keith Berner and Matt Irey. Missler would drive into the lead a lap later, bringing Hahn and Berner into second and third. The first caution would fly on lap 4 for Bill Clap with the running order, Missler, Berner, Hahn, Wallace and Rocky Owens. Missler would pull away on the restart while Berner, Hahn and Owens locked in a great battle for second. The caution would fly on lap 7 for Jeff Esbenshade, but Missler would again pull away when the green came back out.
Another caution with 10 laps in the books for debris had the running order of Missler, Berner, Hahn, Owens, Wallace and a closing Doug Drown who started 12th. With 12 laps in, Missler continued to lead over Berner, Hahn, Owens, Wallace and Drown. Clapp would stop on the track on lap 13 to bring out the caution just as Drown moved into fifth, bringing Larry Kingseed to sixth. On the restart, Missler could not shake Berner while Drown drove into third. With 10 laps remaining, Drown drove under Berner into second and was closing quickly on Missler. The final caution of the event would fly on lap 18 when Ken Hahn and Jeremy Canada tangled.
On the restart Missler would again hit his marks on the top side of the track with Drown pressuring and Berner, Owens and 15th place starter Mike Bores in tow. Drown’s bid for the win would end on lap 20 when he slipped off the top side of turn four, losing four positions. Missler still could not shake Berner as Bores took third on lap 21 with Owens and Kingseed rounding out the top five. Missler would drive to the checkered over Berner, Bores, Owens, and Kingseed.
In the 25-lap 305 sprint feature, Muntz would also drive to the top of the track to take the lead with Jake Trevino, Bobby Clark, Dan Hammond and Nate Dussel in tow. Clark would grab second a lap later and would race right on Muntz’ rear bumper while Trevino, Zack Kramer and Hammond would round out the top five. The first caution would fly on lap 11 for a Junior Felver spin with the running order Muntz, Clark, Trevino, Kramer and 10th place starter Paul Weaver. On the restart Muntz and Clark would drive away as Trevino, Kramer, Weaver and Dussel locked in a tremendous battle for third.
The caution would be displayed on lap 17 when Brad Bowman and Dan Hammond lost power. Again on the restart, Muntz and Clark would drive nose to tail away from Trevino with Weaver, Dussel, Kramer, Steve Rando and D.J. Foos in tow. The car on the move was John Ivy who had steadily worked his way up from his 16th starting spot and was seventh with six laps remaining.
Muntz would continue to hit his marks perfectly with Clark right on his tail. Trevino was comfortably in third while Weaver, Dussel, Kramer, Ivy and Foos racing hard for fourth. The field would be bunched up one final time when Nate Reeser spun with just two laps remaining. Muntz was able to drive away for the victory over Clark, Trevino with Dussel passing Weaver for fourth on the last lap.
Chuck Roelle grabbed the early lead of the 15-lap dirt truck feature with Waltermeier moving into second with Bob Dible, Kent Brewer and Alex Weichman rounding out the top five. Dible would spin on lap two bringing out the only caution of the race. Roelle ran the bottom to continue to lead as Waltermeier raced to his outside with Brewer, Weichman and Paul Brown Jr. in tow.
Waltermeier would drive into the lead on lap five with Roelle holding off Brewer and Weichman. With five laps to go, the truck on the move was Cory Ward who had moved from 12th to third. Waltermeier would drive off to the win over Roelle, Ward, Arnold and Brian Sorg.
Attica Raceway Park will wrap up the 2010 season on Saturday, Sept. 4 as the Baumann Auto Group Presents the Attica Ambush with the O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champion Sprints. The late models and dirt trucks will also be in action.

After an excellent trip to Iowa for the Nationals and some of the races before the Nationals, last weekend it time to search for a new venue closer to home. Spartan Speedway in Mason Michigan is a track just 85 miles from me that I have never attended. It is a paved 1/4 mile track that races on Friday nights for the most part. This year they have been running traditional sprints on pavement every 2 to 3 weeks as part of their regular program. I've been keeping an eye on the results up there and have seen each time it looks like the car count for grown. So, last Friday it was time to head North and check it out.
17 traditional sprints were ready for action. This was the highest car count to date for their sprint car program. With a super quickly ran program, the 2 heats were pushed off right at start time. Young female racer, Taylor Ferns and pavement specialist Charlie Schultz took the heat race wins. Even with 3 other divisions, the heat race action was over in less than 45 minutes.
A special concert was performed before the A Main action so, I got to roam around and visit the few people I knew there. After a chat with Mudclod Bob and Randy, Randy and I went around, with Randy introducing me to several people for up North I've seen race but have never personally met. Just as we got to meeting people, the A Main for the sprints was called to the line area.
Mike Astraukas and Doug Dietsch paced the field for the 25 lap A Main. As the green waved on the small but wide and racy 1/4 mile track, the action began right away. Astraukas took the lead on the start. Just as Jimmy McCune makes a move to take the lead, Ferns and Chris Hettinger collide in turn 4. Both restart. Astraukas leads on the restart as McCune puts the pressure on. Lap 2, McCune makes his move and takes the lead. McCune leads but Jim Henney, Tom Fedewa, Diestch, and Schultz battle upfront. Lap 6, Diestch spins collecting Ferns and Astraukas. All but Diestch rejoin the field. McCune leads on the restart but Henney shows why he is the points leader and makes a power move to take the lead on lap 7. Henney opens up a slight gap as McCune regroups and Fedewa, Schultz and now Tom Hernly Jr battle just a few car lenghts behind the leader. From lap 10 to the end, the race was a shoot out. As the pack approached lapped traffic, Henney, McCune,Fedewa, Schultz, and Hernly are glued together at the front of the pack. At times a bit of bumping and banging was going on was Schultz, McCune, and Fedewa were trying, high, low, and in between to make a move for the lead. 5 to go, they leader are 2 and at times 3 wide in and out of traffic, and literary bumper to bumper. Henney gets caught behind a lapped car, just as McCune makes his move, contact, Fedewa makes a great move past both for the lead on lap 21. Henney and McCune bang some more, shooting McCune up the track, allowing Schultz to take a stab at the lead pack. With the white flag a waving, it was still anyone's race in the top 5. Fedewa holds strong and takes the win. Schultz, Henney, McCune, and Hernly Jr round out the top 5. What a race! Excellent battle all race long. McCune showed his displeasure at Henney after the race, knocking on his door during the cool down lap. How about this Tom Hernly Jr, it was his first run in a sprint car.
After the A, Randy and I walked the pits and I got to meet many more people and have an excellent time. Even as upset as he was at losing a race he had in hand, Jim Henney took time to chat and thank me for coming up to their playground and see what Spartan was all about. I had a great time chatting with Michigan legend Gary Fedewa as well after he found out I was from Bryan and watched him race as I was growing up at Bryan and Avilla. All in all, an excellent night and some super awesome racing. Plus, many many laughs with my Michigan buddy Randy. I even stayed for the entire program, including spectator drags and still got home at 12:30.
I am not sure but, this season has to be one of the worse for driver injuries across the board in quite some time. I am not sure why or what is causing this rash of injuries but, lets hope it stops. Plus, many freak accidents too. Is the cars really getting too lite of components on them now that might be aiding in some of these injuries? Speaking of hurt drivers, many probably don't know but Buckeye Sprint regular Brian Buchanan who hails from the Marblehead OH area had a bad crash at Toledo Speedway back on August 6th during a Buckeye Sprint show. Brian was knocked out and sat in his burning car for a minute or so until safety crews got him out of the car. Brian's left side of his body has 3rd degree burns on about 30% of it. He has been in Saint V's since the night of the accident and has had many skin grafts and is still in much pain. It sounds like Brian will be at Saint V's for another 2 to 4 weeks and will miss up to a year of work. Problem is, he just got called back to his regular job a few months ago and now with this long term injury, can't work for up to a year. Some friends around the Marblehead area are doing some chicken bbq's and such to raise some funds to help Brian out. I have been in contact and am getting information that I will post soon for others that would like to send on a little donation. Brian may not be a racers we see each week or even race at all but he is a racer and is in need of some help to get past this bad accident.
UPCOMING:
Friday: NRA Limaland OH Motorsports Park
Saturday: FAST Attica OH, HOSS Baer Field IN, SOD Owendale MI
keep the rubber side down,
Duane
